The best address for music rolls
First a wonder of the world, soon out of fashion, then almost forgotten, now rediscovered. They're actually just a few holes in a long strip of paper. In fact, the hand-played artist rolls in particular are masterpieces of technical and pianistic artistry, all the more so given the possibilities available in the early 1900s. After more than 100 years, these music rolls continue to inspire more and more people and, above all, offer significant insights for music and interpretation research. With tens of thousands of different titles, this treasure trove of rolls represents a 'world archive of pianistic art' – as Hupfeld called it in 1912. In these two videos, you can see Welte T110 (red) music rolls newly manufactured by us based on an original model. Even for connoisseurs, they're almost indistinguishable from the original, right?
Our goal is to digitize all surviving artist music rolls to preserve them for the future and, ideally, make them accessible to music lovers, pianists, researchers, and more. We have already digitized thousands of titles, especially reproduction rolls by Welte, Hupfeld, and Philipps, thus making an important contribution to the preservation of these cultural and artistic treasures.
We work closely with leading institutions and universities around the world, with public and private museums, as well as passionate collectors and enthusiasts. Our work is guided by appreciation, respect, professionalism, quality, sustainability, and passion. We are not a government research or educational institution, but a commercial enterprise whose cultural, artistic, and research-promoting contribution is reflected in our name, which uses the lowercase 'institut'.
